For mask makers it is considered best practices to include information about fiber content with masks. The specific type of material that fibers are constructed from is referred to as the fiber content (e.g., cotton or polypropylene). Fiber Origin & ContentĪlthough fibers can be characterized in many different ways, one of the most common ways fibers are distinguished is based on their origin, i.e., whether the fibers are natural or manufactured (synthetic). The ways fabrics are constructed (woven, knit, or nonwoven) effect their filtration characteristics and suitability for use in fabric masks. These fibers are then constructed into fabrics. The fiber composition, or fiber content, of fabrics affects their properties and their suitability for use in masks. Fibers are defined as flexible strands of material that are much longer than they are wide. In Mask Fabrics 101we’ll focus on the role of fiber origin and fabric structure on masks. We’ve put together this crash course on mask fabrics to provide some of the fundamental concepts in fabrics and how they are relevant for our collective mask making efforts. Since March, it seems like there has been a constant barrage of conflicting information about which fabrics are the best for masks for COVID-19.
